This is what happens when we kiss

We tend to think we know what the French kiss is all about- until we stop to think about how complex it actually is. What makes this intimate gesture so intense and memorable in terms of emotions? Is it just a statement of want or is there a more complex meaning behind it based on human connection?

What seems like a mundane action is in reality a complex intercourse of sensory stimulation, neurological reaction and emotional susceptibility. French kiss is not only a romantic act but a deep form of communication, that sometimes speaks louder than words.

The Tongue: A Little but a Mighty Tool

The tongue is a very complex and able organ of the human body that is often forgotten. It is made up of eight intertwined muscles and is highly endowed with nerve endings, and is directly linked to parts of the brain that deal with pleasure, sensation and emotional processing.

When you French kiss, the tongue does not just touch, it sends messages that go far into the limbic system of the brain where feelings and memories are stored. This makes the kiss something more than a physical deed; it becomes emotionally charged, even transformative.

The Reason This Kiss is Different

A French kiss is unlike a peck or a kiss on the cheek because it opens one up emotionally. It is a kind of silent trust and openness: a silent way of saying, I am letting you in. It has a rhythm, a back and forth, to this type of kiss.

The partners react to each other intuitively, and a silent dance of love is made. It is not common to find that emotional and physical synchronization and it is usually the cause why such kisses are remembered long after they are experienced.

What Occurs in the Body During French Kiss?

Amazingly, much happens under the surface in this intimate exchange. The following is what happens biologically:

Brain Activation: Areas related to pleasure, memory and bonding, e.g. the ventral tegmental area and the hippocampus become extremely active and this is one of the reasons why passionate kisses can be unforgettable.

Oxytocin Release: Oxytocin is also known as the love hormone or cuddle chemical, it promotes trust, intimacy and emotional connection between couples.

Physical Arousal: The heart rate speeds, the breathing becomes rapid, and a slight feeling of arousal comes. These bodily changes are the response of your body to emotional connection.

Immune System Sharing: The sharing of saliva in a French kiss allows each of the partners immune systems to become acquainted with the bacteria of the other. This is an invisible process which enhances biological compatibility.

More than Romance: A Rite of Reconnection

The French kiss may be a ritual of reconnection to couples, particularly those who are in long-term relationships. It does not need a special occasion or dramatic setting. A kiss in the kitchen when preparing dinner or a moment of intimacy on the couch can rekindle emotional intimacy in a very powerful manner.

These little things tend to have more emotional impact than big show of affection. They reiterate closeness, and remind the partners that the spark is still there, even during the ordinary times.
