Should I be concerned?

Why Those Tiny Red Bugs Suddenly Appear

Seeing tiny red specks moving across a sunny windowsill can be alarming. At first, they may look like red dust, but a closer look reveals they are actually alive. Even stranger, they leave behind a red smear when crushed.

In most cases, these tiny creatures are clover mites — a common but harmless household pest.

What Are Clover Mites?

Clover mites are tiny arachnids related to spiders and ticks. They are extremely small, reddish-brown, and often appear in large numbers around windows, walls, and siding.

One of their most noticeable features is their unusually long front legs, which are often mistaken for antennae.

They are most active during spring and fall, especially when outdoor populations rapidly increase.

Why They Love Sunny Windowsills

Clover mites are attracted to warmth and sunlight. That is why they often gather on south-facing or west-facing windows where the sun hits the strongest.

Homes surrounded by grass, plants, or thick vegetation are especially attractive to them because they feed on plant juices outdoors.
