Math problem divides the internet

In an era where social media thrives on controversy, few would expect a basic math problem to ignite such intense debate. Yet that’s exactly what happened when a single equation went viral.

Back in 2019, a seemingly harmless expression spread across platforms, pulling in thousands of users—and even sparking what was described as a “civil war” inside Popular Mechanics’ office.

What made it so explosive wasn’t just the math itself, but how differently people interpreted the same rules.

The Problem That Started It All

The equation at the center of the storm:

8 ÷ 2(2 + 2)

At first glance, it looks straightforward. But depending on how you apply the order of operations, you can land on two completely different answers: 16 or 1.

Why Some Say the Answer Is 16

Using the standard PEMDAS/BODMAS convention—Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division, Addition and Subtraction—calculations proceed step by step from left to right.

First, solve inside the parentheses:

•2 + 2 = 4

Now the equation becomes:

8 ÷ 2 × 4

Working left to right:

•8 ÷ 2 = 4

•4 × 4 = 16

This interpretation follows the conventional rule set taught in most classrooms.

Still, not everyone agrees.

Mike Breen from the American Mathematical Society explained: “the way it’s written, it’s ambiguous.”

While working with Popular Mechanics, he added: “In math, a lot of times there are ambiguities. Mathematicians try to make rules as precise as possible. According to strict order of operations, you’d get 16, but I wouldn’t hit someone on the wrist with a ruler if they said 1.”

Why Others Argue the Answer Is 1

Those on the other side approach the expression differently.
